Black Ops belongs to the first-person shooter  games genre.It was developed by Treyarch, published by Activision and released worldwide on November 9, 2010 for consoles such as Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3,Wii and Nintendo DS version which was developed by n-Space. Announced on April 30, 2010, the game is the seventh installment of the Call Of Duty franchise, and the first to be set in the Cold War. It is the third in the series to be developed by Treyarch, and is a sequel to Treyarch’s Call Of Duty :World At War

It broke the record set by Call Of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 within 24 hours of going on sale, the game sold more than 7 million copies, 5.6 million in the U.S. and 1.4 million in the U.K.,It leaded Modern warfare by some 2.5 million copies.A subtitled  and an Japanese-dubbed version were released in Japan on November 18, 2010 and  on December 16, 2010 respectively.

Call Of Duty - Story Line

Black Ops is set during the Cold War, Most of the missions in the game are presented as flashbacks between 1961 and 1968.The main protagonist of the game is Alex Mason with the player sometimes controlling CIA Jason Hudson and some other characters. The story focuses on the CIA’s Special Activities Division(SAD) Studies and Observations Group (SOG) – backed clandestine black operations. These missions take the player to various locations  such as the Ural Mountains in central Russia,Cuba, Laos, and Vietnam.

The single-player mode the whole plot revolves around revolves around an experimental Soviet chemical weapon codenamed “Nova-6”.Mason often works with Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman, while Hudson teams up with Grigori Weaver, a Russian field operative. Viktor Reznov, a key character from the Soviet campaign in World at War returns. Its Russian protagonist Dimitri Petrenko also makes an appearance. Black Ops features several historical figures such as John F. Kennedy, Robert McNamara, and Fidel Castro. The game shows an archive footage of President Kennedy prior to his assassination,with the broadcaster and Mason narrating random numbers.In the archive footage, Mason’s appearance in the crowd, as well as Dragovich’s final words suggesting that Mason followed his original programming and that he assassinated Kennedy.


Battle Ground

Black Ops is a game of the first-person shooter genre. The player assumes the role of a foot soldier who can use several weapons,A player can carry only two weapons at a time can,he can throw grenades and other explosives; and use other equipment as weapons. A player can also kill to an enemy with one knife blow if he is close enough. A player can have three stances: standing, crouching, or prone with each affects having different rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. The player can dive prone from a standing position when running. The player can momentarily sprint but with the possibility of growing tired. The screen glows red to indicate damage to a player’s health. The game provides weapons such as crossbows with bolts and explosive ammunition, Dragon’s Breath rounds and ballistic knives.

Single-player mode:

The player can play the role of various characters during the single-player mode.The characters are special forces operatives conducting Black Operations .The objectives are shown as in the previous COD games. The player is accompanied by other troops.The player can also pilot a Hind helicopter to guide friendly troops from a SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.

Multiplayer mode:

The multiplayer mode allows the player to go online  and the game also retains the experience points and unlockable reward system that has been kept since Call Of Duty 4 The “Create-a-Class 2.0” allows enhanced personalization with appearance.Weapons can be customized with writing, emblems, attachments and camouflage painting. The players are allowed to buy weapons, accessories and clothes. Players can also get involved in a game called a “Wager Match”, which has four game modes in which the players acan bet their COD points.Online split-screen is re-introduced on Xbox 360 and PS3. Steam is the  platform for Black Ops on PC, and the game is protected by Valve Anti-Cheat.

The clips from online gameplay can be recorded,which is introduced for the first time in the COD franchise . The Wii version of the game includes in-game voice chat. This is also the first time that a game in COD franchise includes the voice chat feature for the Wii. Nintendo and PDP have partnered to release the first headset to be used with the Wii known as PDP’s Headbanger Headset.


A zombie cooperation mode, titled “Zombies”, is included in the game. Originally being featured in World At War. It is a four-player online and two-player split screen co-op mode (which can also be unlocked online). In the map “Five”, players take the roles of John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Robert McNamara, and Fidel Castro as they fight zombies at The Pentagon.Limited editions of the game offers four zombie maps from World At War.



In May 2009,David Kim a former employee of Treyarch’s revealed on his LinkedIn profile that he would work as a senior animator on Call Of Duty 7.In November 2009,Before the release of Modern Warfare 2,Activision officially announced a new Call Of  Duty for 2010 through their third quarter financial call. In February 2010, a casting call for Call Of Duty 7 led to speculation that the game would be taking place during the Cold War era with some battles taking place in South Vietnam.,Black Ops was officially announced on April 30, 2010.

Special forces veterans from both sides of the Cold War like Major (US Army-Ret.) who served in the MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War, and former Soviet special forces operative Sonny Puzikas were consulted during the development.Puzikas helped  Treyarch regarding the Spetsnaz soldiers combat skills and techniques, such as rolling out of the line of fire. Spetsnaz AI’s in the game have been modeled after him, from his tactics and his movements to his face.

The game runs on the same engine as World at War but a little enhanced at 60 frames per second on consoles.Black Ops supports 3-D imaging as well.A motion  capture technology similar to the one used in James Cameron’s film Avatar, which allows accurate facial expressions, capturing the whole performance of the actor was used by Treyarch.

Reviews and Critical Reception:

Black Ops has received generally positive reviews from critics. Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the Xbox 360 version of the game has received an average score of 88, based on 65 reviews.Gamespot awarded it 9.0 out of ten and said “Call of Duty: Black Ops bears the series’ standard superbly, delivering an engrossing campaign and exciting competitive multiplayer”. Edge magazine gave it a 7/10, stating “As polished and pretty and fun as Black Ops often is, it feels more like a yearly update than a sequel which isn’t distinct from its predecessors in any important way”.

Reviewers pointed out that PC version of the game had bugs and had a number of  problems. Players have also reported serious bugs with the PS3 version.On November 12, 2010, three days after the release, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of the game held average user ratings of 3.1, 3.1, and 1.8 stars on, respectively (on a 1 to 5 scale), with many PC users complaining about lag, stuttering and bugs.

The Official Nintendo Magazine awarded the Wii version 90% and stated “Black Ops on Wii is a fantastic shooter packed with all the features of its HD brothers, with the only exception being split-screen multiplayer.”
